How to Update Your Renault GPS

A clear, step-by-step walkthrough for updating maps and software on R-Link, Carminat TomTom, and Easy Link navigation systems.

Step 1

Identify your navigation system

Renault vehicles use a few different navigation platforms depending on the model and year. Check your touchscreen branding or the System > Status and Information menu to confirm which one you have.

Common in mid-2010s models

R-Link & R-Link Evolution

Renault's own touchscreen infotainment system. Updated using the Alliance Connect Toolbox, the R-Link Toolbox, or the Naviextras Toolbox depending on the exact version.

Common in older models

Carminat TomTom

A TomTom-powered system using an SD card. Updates are managed entirely through the TomTom HOME desktop application on a computer.

Common in newer models

Easy Link

Renault's newer connected infotainment system. Often supports over-the-air updates directly on-screen, with USB-based updates via the Alliance Connect Toolbox as a backup.

Step 2

Update instructions by system

Follow the steps that match your navigation system. All three methods take you through official companion software or the on-screen menu.

R-Link & R-Link Evolution

Uses a USB drive and desktop companion software to check your vehicle profile and download available updates.

  1. Insert a USB drive (typically 8–32GB, FAT32-formatted) into your vehicle's USB port and let the system write your vehicle data to it.
  2. Remove the USB drive and plug it into your computer.
  3. Download and open the Alliance Connect Toolbox, R-Link Toolbox, or Naviextras Toolbox — the correct one depends on your system version.
  4. Sign in with your MyRenault account, or enter your vehicle's VIN if prompted.
  5. Check for available software and map updates, then download them to the USB drive.
  6. Reinsert the USB drive into your vehicle with the engine running, and let the update install automatically without removing it.

Carminat TomTom

Uses an SD card and the TomTom HOME desktop application, since this system does not support USB or over-the-air updates.

  1. From the Carminat TomTom main menu, select "Remove SD card" and wait for the on-screen confirmation before removing it.
  2. Insert the SD card into a card reader connected to your computer.
  3. Download and install TomTom HOME if you don't already have it.
  4. Open TomTom HOME and sign in with your TomTom account.
  5. Click "Update my device," select the available map or software update, and start the download.
  6. With the vehicle and radio off, reinsert the SD card into the Carminat TomTom, then switch on the ignition and confirm the on-screen installation prompt.

Easy Link

Often the simplest system to update, since many versions support checking and installing updates directly on the touchscreen.

  1. On the Easy Link screen, go to Menu > System Settings > Software Update.
  2. If an over-the-air update is available, follow the on-screen prompts to download and install it directly.
  3. If no over-the-air update appears, use the Alliance Connect Toolbox on a computer with a USB drive (typically at least 8GB) instead.
  4. Download the update to the USB drive, then insert it into your vehicle with the engine running.
  5. Do not remove the USB drive or use the Easy Link system until the installation-complete message appears on screen.
Before you start

What you'll need

Having everything ready before you begin makes the update process faster and avoids interrupted installs partway through.

  • A USB drive or SD cardCapacity and format requirements vary by system — check the on-screen prompt or toolbox instructions for the exact specification.
  • A stable internet connectionMap packages can be large, so a reliable connection avoids incomplete downloads.
  • Your vehicle identification number (VIN)Some toolboxes use your VIN to match the correct update package to your exact vehicle.
  • A MyRenault or TomTom accountRequired to sign in to the relevant update software and check subscription status.
Common issues

Update troubleshooting

General starting points for the most common problems people run into during a Renault GPS update.

USB drive not recognized

Reformat the drive as FAT32, use a different USB port, and confirm the drive meets the capacity range your system requires.

No update available

Check whether your map or software subscription has expired — this can prevent new updates from appearing even when they exist.

VIN not recognized

Double-check the VIN for typos, and confirm it's entered exactly as shown on your vehicle registration or windshield plate.

Update stuck or frozen mid-install

Let the process run — some installs take longer than expected. If it stays stuck for an extended period, restart the vehicle and try again.

Screen unresponsive after update

Try a forced restart by holding the power button for around 10 seconds. If it persists, the system may need a factory reset.

Not sure which toolbox to use

Match your exact system name and version (shown in Status and Information) to the correct software — using the wrong one is a common source of confusion.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Check the branding shown on your touchscreen, or go to System > Status and Information to see the exact system name and version.

Software and safety-related updates are typically free. Map updates are often free for a set number of years after purchase and may require a paid subscription afterward, depending on your system and region.

Requirements vary by system, but most ask for a drive between 8GB and 32GB, formatted as FAT32. The exact figure will appear in the on-screen prompt or the toolbox software.

Easy Link systems in newer vehicles often support over-the-air updates directly through the touchscreen. Older systems like R-Link and Carminat TomTom generally require a computer and USB drive or SD card.

Downloading a map package to your computer can take anywhere from several minutes to over an hour depending on your connection. Installing in the vehicle itself is usually quicker, often a few minutes.

For some systems, yes — navigation simply becomes available again once the install finishes. Always follow the specific on-screen instructions for your system, since this varies.

Restart the vehicle and try reinstalling from the USB drive or SD card. If it continues to fail, re-download the update files, since the original download may be incomplete or corrupted.

Always download directly from Renault Easy Connect, Naviextras, or TomTom HOME's official sites, listed in the resources section above — avoid third-party download links.
